Dispute Settlement DB-3 Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Dispute Settlement DB-3 - Research Paper Example One of the major markets of GM is China with 2.3 million vehicles sold in 2010, a 29 percent increase from 2009. GM attributes this increase in sales to the economic stimulus incentives in place in China. According to David Chen, the Vice President for GM, China Group, the government encourages local production of vehicles in China without considering whether the manufacturer is a domestic or foreign company (China Business Review, 2011). Furthermore in 2010, the government issued a policy that it will give an incentive of $460 rebates on the purchase of fuel efficient cars. This policy serves GM well because 26 vehicles manufactured by GM in China qualify for the rebate. Another international policy in China that proves beneficial to GM is that the government allows the use of lesser grade steel (Muller, 2010). This can be translated to a lower cost in manufacturing a car for China. International policies such as the above cited have positive impacts on the sales of GM; thus, the China market is a major market for GM. Even as early as 1997, GM already foresaw that China will be a big market for them; therefore, they invested in a joint venture with the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC) to establish their first technical center joint venture in China (China Business Review, 2011). Investments such as these have proven to be worthwhile for GM. GM is very optimistic with their China market and has intentions of increasing further their investment in the country because of the supportive policies of the government. In view of this, GM projects that in 15 to 20 years from now their sales could reach to a whooping 20 million cars. Another market of GM is India. Although GM entered the Indian market 16 years ago, it is now moving towards intensifying its market by focusing on dealerships and service network expansion (The Indian Express, 2012). In India, GM focuses on the small car market because of the

The study is based on a theoretical framework discussing the many kinds of variables that need to be considered. The studies analyzed discuss the various views and methods used to implement the hourly rounding. The overall article shows a theoretical perspective of why the hourly rounding is needed, is significant, is effective, improves the patient satisfaction, and how it should be managed to ensure the future results are effective too. The research hypotheses are the use of hourly rounding in the nursing profession to improve the quality of services

A report on recruitment and selection process for the recruiting

A report on recruitment and selection process for the recruiting 1a) Describe a suitable recruitment and selection process for Barretts Carvery. The owners of Barretts Carvery a traditional pub restaurant are interested in expanding their menu by offering other hot plates such as hot pots, stew, and dumplings. Presently the restaurant offers a number of options, including the traditional dinner, vegetarian dinner, and childrens dinner. This report describes the recruitment, selection, and retention process for the three additional employees needed to expand the restaurants menu, along with recommendations to build a wining team, ensure effective leadership, and identify work and development needs for Barretts Carvery. RECRUITMENT PROCESS According to EDWIN FLIPPO Recruitment is the process of searching for prospective employees, and stimulating them to apply for jobs in the organization (Draft and Marcic, 2008). The recruitment process begins with identifying the need for staff, which usually derives from the human resources plan. Barretts Carvery has identified the need for three additional staff to assist in the kitchen and to be servers. For every organization it is important to have the right person in the right position. When the wrong person for the position is hired, it typically results in having to refill the position again. Time, money, and energy are lost during this downtime, as well as additional recruiting and training costs. It hurts a company to have an open position in several ways, including loss of productivity, frustration of continuous retraining and inability to progress with company initiatives. Bad hires may also result in good employees leaving the company, creating an even greater turnover p roblem (Main, 2009). The key objective is to be cost effective in the numbers, and quality of employees required fulfilling the human resources needs of an organization. Today, recruiting is sometimes referred to as talent acquisition to reflect the importance of the human factor in the organizations success. (Draft and Marcic, 2008). It is important for Barretts Carvery to get a clear picture of what kind of individuals are needed which can be accomplished by designing a job description along with a person specification. A job and persons description is an organized process of gathering and interpreting information about the essential duties, tasks, and responsibilities of the job to be performed. A persons specification or job specification is vital to any organization as it enables the company to find the perfect person- to-job-fit, (Scribd, 2010). Moreover, it is also important that the skills, aptitudes, and knowledge outlined in the person specification are directly related to the needs of the job: if this is not so expectations will not be met, and both employers and employees will be disappointed (Scribd, 2010). The following job and person descriptions are recommended for the positions of a Server and Kitchen Assistant for Barretts Carvery to assist in their recruitment and selection process. JOB SPECIFICATION FOR SERVER JOB TITLE: Server DEPARTMENT: Dining REPORTS TO: Dining Section Manager OBJECTIVES: Our goal is to be professional and courteous at all times, to provide our customer the best services in order to gain a competitive edge, and to ensure total customer satisfaction. (Food and Beverage Underground 2007-2008) Check out, after organizing and calculating the check you are required to take it to the manager on duty who will review and approve same. (Food and Beverage Underground 2007-2008) Based on the job description, job and person specification Barretts Carvery should conduct an internal assessment to determine whether or not their needs can be met from existing staff resources through retraining or redevelopment. If these needs can be filled internally, the company should advertise the positions internally. Internal recruiting has several advantages: It is less costly than external search, and it generates higher employee commitment, development, and satisfaction because it offers opportunities for career advancement to employees rather than outsiders (Draft and Marcic, 2008). The simple monetary aspect of promoting qualified employees is the most obvious advantage. The costs associated with recruiting and training a new employee can be significantly higher than filling that position by promoting from within. A newly hired employee must take time to become acclimated to the corporate environment and learn the daily routines and minutiae that is already second natur e to an already employed worker (Sexton, 2007). Sexton went on to mentioned, depending upon the intricacies involved, its not unusual for it take several weeks or even months for a new employee to fully learn and acclimate himself to the company culture and become productive. By contrast, an employee already familiar with the company may be fully productive in a new position within a matter of days. In addition, the company will be better able to determine the psychological state of those already employed than it can of workers from outside the company (Sexton, 2007). Although there are some advantages with internal recruiting frequently , however external recruiting is advantageous, applicants are available through a variety of outside sources, including advertising, state employment services, online recruiting services, private employment agencies, job fairs and employee referrals (Draft and Marcic, 2008). If the vacancies cannot be filled internally then Barretts Carvery should begin its recruitment process by advertising externally. If no suitable applicants are identified after advertising then the company can opt to re-advertise, or redesign the job and person specification. SELECTION PROCESS On receipt of applications for the position Barretts Carvery should create shortlist in an attempt to determine which applicants are most suitable to fill the position; this commences the selection process. The selection process is the process of determining the skills, abilities, and other attributes a person needs to perform a particular job (Daft Marcic, 2008). The next step would be to select desired candidates from the shortlist of recruited applicants, and conduct interviews or assessment tests for the potential candidates. The suitability of the potential candidates can be assessed by various methods such as the use of application forms, interviews, tests, and assessment centers (Daft Marcic, 2008). In identifying suitable candidates, Barretts Carvery can use applications form to obtain information about persons applying for the position. The application form generally includes education, past job experiences, and personalities of the potential candidate. However, when reviewing application forms, Barretts Carvery should pay attention to questions specifically related to the position posted, so as not to create any undesirable outcome, and ensure there are no discriminatory practices. In addition to the information on the application forms, Barretts Carvery can also use the information garnered during the interview process. According to BusinessDictionary (2007-2010), an interview is a somewhat formal discussion between two parties in which information is exchanged. For a business looking to fill an open job position, an employer might interview potential candidates to gain a better understanding of their backgrounds, qualifications, and skills. Some organizations place major emphasis on the interview process. Google a popular search engine, for example, it could take an applicant anywhere from four to a dozen interviews before they get a shot at working with this company (Tay, 2006). Interviews are considered the most common method used in the selection process. Interviews give the interviewer an opportunity to meet the applicants face to face and see what the person is like and would be able to assess the applicants personalities (CIPD, revised 2010). It is recommended that Barretts Carvery conduct face-to-face interviews which will allow the company the opportunity to assess the applicants in person. Employment test can also play an important role in Barretts Carverys selection process. Employment tests are designed to assess applicants on particular characteristics like intelligence, skills, and other abilities. These tests can be written or computer-based (Daft Marcic, 2008). Today, about 50 percent of all companies ask candidates to answer questions that aim to measure their success at particular jobs for which they apply, industry experts said. Tests generally fall into three categories: cognition and ability tests, which measure an innate capability or intelligence; simulations and skill tests, which measure facts that a person knows; and personality and other indicator tests, which measure values and the right orientation for a specific job (Joyce, 2006). When creating its short list, Barretts Carvery, should ensure that the applicants selected must match the person specification to avoid costs of hiring the wrong persons. The final stage in Barretts Carverys selection process would be to confirm the offer to the selected applicants, who are then sent to undergo a medical for the purpose of pension, life insurance, or to ensure a certain level of physical fitness that may be required to carry out the job. The management of Barretts Carvery should then prepare the contract of employment. 1b) what benefits could Barretts Carvery offer the staff in order for them to remain within the organization? RETENTION Retaining employees is critical in any business. Employee turnover can become problematic especially in areas where skills are relatively scarce, recruitment is costly, or when it takes a long period to fill a vacancy. While employee turnover can be beneficial in some instances by replacing an underperforming employee with a more productive one, it can also have a negative impact such as the lost of productive employees to the competitors. In increasing its staff complement, Barretts Carvery must also ensure that the restaurant retains its current employees which can be accomplished by offering carious employee benefits (CIPD, 2009). EMPLOYEES BENEFITS Employee benefits are elements of remuneration given in addition to the various forms of cash pay. Employees benefits can also include items that are not strictly remuneration, such as annual holidays. (Armstrong, 2006). Employee benefits and their objectives may differ from one organization to another, certainly in the case of restaurants where little or no benefits are offered. According to Food Services Warehouse (2009), wages and salaries vary slightly from restaurant to restaurant, even for the same position. However, restaurant worker wages are different depending on the type of restaurant, the geographical location, and the worker responsibilities Restaurants are one of the businesses known to pay less than minimum wage, and the benefits are what the employees depend on which is sometimes minimal (Food Services Warehouse 2009). The most common restaurant employee benefits are said to be tips, meals, and paid time off. Although tips are often considered a benefit of working in a restaurant, many servers and bartenders would most likely consider it part or their income. (Food Services Warehouse 2009) Based on the fact that tips is not paid by the employer but rather by the customers, tips may not be considered a reliable benefits by some employees, especially in none elite restaurant such as Barretts Carvery. As tips are sometimes supported by the customers perception of the quality of services received, one recommendation Barretts Carvery can employ to retain employees is making gratuity mandatory. Mandatory gratuity which is then pass on to the respective employee, may give the employees a sense of security of receiving this benefit. However, gratuity, from personal experiences, can be problematic especially at times when the service rendered is abysmal. In cases were services are found deficient, Barretts Carvery should take corrective measures. Barretts Carvery could also offer the other common benefits including meals and paid time-off (Food Services Warehouse 2009). Another recommendation is to implement an Employee of the Month recognition program. A recognition program would enable employees to feel valued, which has a positive effect on staff retention (Jones 2010). KFC has a staff recognition program, and Misty Reich, vice-president HR at KFC UK and Ireland Reich, believes the companys culture of recognition sets it apart from its competitors (Jones 2010). It is not something you can really fabricate, says Reich. It comes off as being very inauthentic if it is not in the DNA of a business, and it is very much in our DNA (Jones 2010). Although monetary factor may appear to be the first choice of employee benefits there are other motivating factors that can drive employee to remain with companies including training, the access to the right tools (Heathfield 2010). Moreover, there are also some uncommon benefits within the restaurant industries which can be used by the management of Barretts Carvery; these include Insurance Medical, Dental, Vis ion, Life, and Disability. Barretts Carvery could offer one or more of these uncommon benefits which may not only help in the retention of employees, but also in gaining a competitive edge (Food Services Warehouse 2009). 1c) what ethical and legal implications will Barretts Carvery need to be aware of when recruiting new staff? ETHICAL AND LEGAL CONSIDERATION When recruiting new staff, Barretts Carvery must be cognizant of ethical and legal implication that may have an adverse impact on the business. Ethics take many forms, but in its most fundamental nature, ethics can be regarded as a set of principals of which governs the right conduct of a person (Draft and Marcic, 2008). Ethical Consideration should not be taken lightly by an employer or employee. HR specialists are concerned with ethical standards in three ways: their conduct as professionals, the values that govern their behaviour and the ethical standards of their firms (Armstrong, 2006). In an effort to prevent unethical conduct when recruiting new staff, Barretts Carvery must ensure that selected candidates have a clear understanding of the companys code of conduct and policies, which if not adhere to can result in dismissal. For example, employees of one of UK biggest restaurant chains can be dismissed if they do not adhere to the code of conduct, of not to encourage customers to leave cash tips. According to The Guardian (2009) Employees of Tragus which owns Strada, Cafà © Rouge, and Bella Italia are forbidden to tell diners that the optional service charge is used to subsidize the national minimum wage paid to waiters. Cash tips go directly to staff, but those paid by card go to the company. The company sent a memo last month to all restaurant managers telling them to crack down on staff who appeared to be encouraging customers to leave cash instead of putting the service charge on their card (Elliot, 2009). Barretts Carvery should be aware of the negative implications unethical behavior can have on the reputation, the employees, and operational success of the restaurant. Unethical behavior can have detrimental effects on organizations in ways including giving the company a bad image, causing ineffectiveness, harm sales, and worsen communication which can be costly to retract or repair (National Business Ethics Survey, 2000). Barretts Carvery should ensure that the new and current staff do not indulge in behavior that may be unethical questionable, as this may impact the productivity level of the restaurant. The paper went on to mention that, unethical behavior decreased efficiency, and increases misconduct (National Business Ethics Survey, 2000). In one survey, 71 percent of employees who saw honesty applied rarely or never in their organization had seen misconduct in the past year, compare with 52 percent who saw honesty applied occasionally, and 25 percent who saw it frequently. The f igures were similar for respect and trust (National Business Ethics Survey, 2000). Unethical behavior towards employees can hinder productivity, trust, caused demotivation, worsen absenteeism, and even affect the performance of the highly skilled (Michael and Rao, 2005). In addition to ethical implications, Barretts Carvery must also be concerned with legal consideration when recruiting new staff. One reason why the management of Barretts Carvery should be concerned about the legal implications is to minimize risks of being involved in legal battles. One method to minimize legal risks is to ensure that the recruiting practices conform to the laws that govern the hiring of employees. Barretts Carvery should also take care to ensure that the additional steps in the recruitment process such as job postings, questions asked during the interviews, the checking of references, and job offers, all comply with the legal requirements. Barretts Carvery can also refer to other sources for guidance on ethical and legal implications on hiring new staff. One such source is the Recruiter Guide. According to the A Recruiter Guide job postings or advertisements should not be published which give preference to: Race Colour Ancestry Place of origin Political belief Religion Marital status Family status Physical Mental disability Sex Sexual orientation Age Avoiding discrimination during the recruitment process does not only steer clear of legal battles it also allows you to select the best person for the job. Barretts Carvery must ensure that applicants are not selected based on race, sex, age, political beliefs, religious affiliation or any of the above because people can bring employment tribunal claim if they think they were discriminated during the selection process (Business Link, 2007). In addition to the Recruiter Guide, Barretts Carvery can also use the governing laws to avoid negative ethical and legal implication when recruiting new staff. According to BC Laws, Employment Standard Act, Chapter 13, when hiring an employee the following must be enforced. No False representations Hiring of Children No charge for hiring or providing No fees to other persons Employment and talent places must be licensed Farm labor contractor must be licensed Written employment contract required for domestics Register of employees working in residences It is recommended that Barretts Carvery examine the laws that govern to ensure that it is protected from any adverse legal and ethical implications. Barretts Carvery must also ensure that its employees familiarized themselves with these laws to recognized and prevent unlawful acts that may have ethical and legal implications. CONCLUSION In seeking to increase the number of employees, Barretts Carvery should not take its recruitment, selection, and retention processes lightly. The company should ensure that the job descriptions and person specifications are clear as possible; this is the foundation for selecting the right person for the job. Ensuring that the person specification is directly related to the job, and not selecting the right person for the job can prevent unnecessary costs. In an effort to select the right candidate Barretts Carvery should ensure that the method used, application forms, interviews, tests, etc are tailored to suit the job description: this is important, as not doing so can result in hiring the wrong persons. Moreover, Barretts Carvery must steer clear of any unethical behavior that may tarnished the image of the company, and should ensure that the companys recruitment, selection and retention processes addresses all ethical/unethical and legal issues that can arise. The company should en sure that all the laws that govern are adhere to, as doing so in the recruitment process can reduce the chances of misconduct and lawsuits.

Film Comparison- Shawshank Redemption VS Murder In The First :: essays research papers

COMPARISON Shawshank Redemption and Murder in the First are two eminently engaging films about corrupt prisons and issues such as brutality occurring within the walls. "The Shawshank Redemption" is a compelling film about two imprisoned convicted murderers. Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), is innocent, however. Convicted of killing his wife and her lover (a crime for which he clearly had a strong motive), he really "didn't do". Of course, as his jailbird friend "Red" (Morgan Freeman) puts it, "Everybody in here is innocent." Well, Red is "the only guilty man" in Shawshank Prison. As their friendship develops, Andy learns the ropes of prison. Meanwhile, the warden (Bob Gunton) decides that Andy, a well- educated former banker could carry out something more useful than laundry. So, he places Andy as the prison librarian, and later, as his an accountant (he does taxes for all the jail's employees). Andy also assists the warden in money scams (as he tells Red, "I was always an honest man - I had to come to jail to become a crook!") Murder in the First takes a more realistic scenario and engages at a more full on approach. Henri Young (Kevin Bacon), arrived in the prison of Alcatraz after stealing $5 from a food store to feed his young sister. Young's second mistake was an attempted escaped from the inescapable fortress, bringing public humiliation to the sadistic associate warden, Milton Glenn (Gary Oldman). In violation of the federal guidelines that mandate 19-day maximums for solitary confinement, Glenn orders three years of physical torture and isolation in a black dungeon five feet high. No light, no water. The broken, twisted man who emerges three years later immediately murders fellow inmate Rufus McCain, the informer who betrayed him, and is now on trial.Christian Slater portrays the young lawyer assigned to deal with the case as a learning experience, thus not expecting to win it. As the trial goes on, Slater proves to be more than a match. As you can see, both of the films presented good storylines. But it’s the acting, camera techniques and plotting that make them stand apart from each other. While Murder in the first, showing the true story of one who went through the horrible ordeal made a good story, the film didn’t shine as well as Shawshank Redemption as the extra efforts put in such as the originality makes it stand above the rest.

‘Tis the Season

The Season Just because we all grow up physically does not mean we have to allow ourselves to become numb to all the things that made us feel giddy as a child. Everyone knows how exciting it can feel to wake up on Christmas morning. All December long, we work to ring in the Christmas spirit by giving to others, displaying festive colors of green and red, and enjoying the constant Jingle of holiday music in the background of everything we do.I personally feel like a little kid, naive and blissfully ignorant very year on December 25th. There's something magical about all the traditions and events that make me feel forever young at heart on this special day. At our house, though I am a fully-grown only child, my parents still enforce the mystery of Santa Claus. On Christmas Eve we all gather In the kitchen, warmed by the radiating heat of a wood-fired stove, and bake fresh gingersnaps that embrace every room In the house with their saccharine fragrance. We lay them out on a festive plate with a refreshing glass of cold milk, and as I sleepily tiptoe my way to bed I pretend that I actually believe a chubby man in a crimson suit will shoot out of our chimney and joyfully gobble them up while I'm asleep. Then I wake up early the next morning and peek out the window and watch puffy white flakes descend gently to the ground, and the crisp, cold air chills the palms of my hands as I touch the frosty glass. My mind says there is no such thing as magic or flying reindeer, but as I observe the delicate snowfall and notice one lonely, half-eaten gingersnap left on our plate in the kitchen, my heart starts to believe all over again. Later, when I'm done absorbing the simple leisure of Christmas morning in my solitary silence, I drag my feet all the way to my parents' bedroom and I wake them up. They reluctantly roll out of the comfort of their warm bed Like two teenagers getting up for school on a dreary Monday morning. After they pour themselves a steaming hot cup of bitter, b lack coffee, we all congregate in the living room around the Christmas tree. Before we even consider tearing into the plethora of gifts wrapped in shiny, foil paper and topped with curly ribbons, we sit together for a while, and we are hushed by the fatigue of early ironing and the distinct elegance of the glimmering lights that dress the tall, green tree that appear like stars in a cloudless midnight sky. Eventually someone will break the infinite silence by saying â€Å"Whiffs going to open the first one? Then we dig into the various gifts, being particular with which boxes we choose first. Sometimes I shake the box like a rattle to try and guess what lies within its layers of cardboard, scotch tape, and colorful wrapping paper. We all watch each other, waiting eagerly for a surprised reaction. When we are done scavenging through every Inch of the ere, we enjoy each others company and sit contently on our couch while we watch a classic, the movie A Christmas Story.Christmas, I'm sure, is celebrated very different from person to person. Hopefully, my family. Christmas is a time to believe, whether that be in a Jolly, old, overweight man, the spirit of giving, or the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is when people should let themselves feel young again, and for me, that means baking cookies and waking up early with my parents Christmas morning so we can watch a movie together. As the wise Dry. Issues once wrote, â€Å"Maybe Christmas,' the Grinds thought, ‘doesn't come from a store.

INTRODUCTION Background of Stock Exchange of India The emergence of stock market can be traced back to 1830. In Bombay, business passed in the shares of banks like the commercial bank, the chartered mercantile bank, the chartered bank, the oriental bank and the old bank of Bombay and shares of cotton presses. In Calcutta, Englishman reported the quotations of 4%, 5%, and 6% loans of East India Company as well as the shares of the bank of Bengal in 1836. This list was a further broadened in 1839 when the Calcutta newspaper printed the quotations of banks like union bank and Agra bank. It also quoted the prices of business ventures like the Bengal bonded warehouse, the Docking Company and the storm tug company. Between 1840 and 1850, only half a dozen brokers existed for the limited business. But during the share mania of 1860-65, the number of brokers increased considerably. By 1860, the number of brokers was about 60 and during the exciting period of the American Civil war, their number increased to about 200 to 250. The end of American Civil war brought disillusionment and many failures and the brokers decreased in number and prosperity. It was in those troublesome times between 1868 and 1875 that brokers organized an informal association and finally as recited in the Indenture constituting the â€Å"Articles of Association of the Exchange†. On or about 9th day of July,1875, a few native brokers doing brokerage business in shares and stocks resolved upon forming in Bombay an association for protecting the character, status and interest of native share and stock brokers and providing a hall or building for the use of the members of such association. As a meeting held in the broker’ Hall on the 5th day of February, 1887, it was resolved to execute a formal deal of association and to constitute the first managing committee and to appoint the first trustees. Accordingly, the Articles of Association of the Exchange and the Stock Exchange was formally established in Bombay on 3rd day of December, 1887. The Association is now known as â€Å"The Stock Exchange†. The entrance fee for new member was Re. 1 and there were 318 members on the list, when the exchange was constituted. The numbers of members increased to 333 in 1896, 362 in 1916and 478 in 1920 and the entrance fee was raised to Rs. 5 in 1877, Rs. 1000 in 1896, Rs. 2500 in 1916 and Rs. 48,000 in 1920. At present there are 23 recognized stock exchanges with about 6000 stock brokers. Organization structure of stock exchange varies. 14 stock exchanges are organized as public limited companies, 6 as companies limited by guarantee and 3 are non-profit voluntary organization. Of the total of 23, only 9 stock exchanges have been permanent recognition. Others have to seek recognition on annual basis. A History of gangs in the USA essays

A History of gangs in the USA essays Although it is not fair and certainly not warranted to connect any ethnic group with organized crime, it is a fact that the massive immigration of the early 1900s fueled the creation of the early gangs, particularly in New York City. As more and more immigrants began to land unload into New York harbors they began to complete with each other for houses, jobs and most importantly respect. Many of the immigrants who arrived in New York were often struggling financially in their home country and had come to America in order to escape the harsh realities of their lives. Of these immigrants who came to America searching for a better life, many eventually turned to crime. These immigrants are quickly condemned by many historians as being destructive and violent and of knowing nothing but crime. Herbert Asbury wrote in the main the gangster was a stupid roughneck born in filth and squalor and reared amid vice and corruption. He fulfilled his natural destiny (Intro GONY). This is the view ta ken by many historians that the members of these early gangs were simply bad apples who destined to become criminals, however it is important to remember that many of these immigrants were simply searching for a better life in America and were often denied the opportunity because of their ethnicity. During the flood of immigrants from Ireland around the turn of the century they were greeted with signs saying, no Irish need apply at many of the places where they would search for employment. Later Italian and Eastern European immigrants received much the same treatment. It is no wonder then that these immigrants surrounded themselves with people of their own ethnicity and that they eventually turned to crime. Immigrants had come to America to make something of themselves, with rock hard resolve and determination many fought to succeed in the American work place. Unfortunately many failed because they were denied the opportunities given...

Vatican City Is an Independent Country

Vatican City Is an Independent Country There are eight accepted criteria used to determine whether an entity is an independent country (also known as a State with a capital s) or not. Let us examine these eight criteria in regard to the Vatican City, a tiny (the smallest in the world) country located entirely within the city of Rome, Italy. The Vatican City is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, with over one billion adherents worldwide. Why the Vatican City Counts as a Country 1. Has space or territory that has internationally recognized boundaries (boundary disputes are OK.) Yes, the Vatican City’s boundaries are undisputed even though the country is located entirely within the city of Rome. 2. Has people who live there on an ongoing basis. Yes, the Vatican City is home to approximately 920 full-time residents who maintain passports from their home country and diplomatic passports from the Vatican. Thus, it is as though the entire country is composed of diplomats. In addition to the over 900 residents, approximately 3000 people work at the Vatican City and commute into the country from the greater Rome metropolitan area. 3. Has economic activity and an organized economy. A country regulates foreign and domestic trade and issues money. Somewhat. The Vatican relies on the sale of postage stamps and tourist mementos, fees for admission to museums, and the sale of publications as governmental revenue. The Vatican City issues its own coins. There is not much foreign trade but there is significant foreign investment by the Catholic Church. 4. Has the power of social engineering, such as education. Sure, although there aren’t a lot of kids there! 5. Has a transportation system for moving goods and people. There are no highways, railroads, or airports. The Vatican City is the smallest country in the world. It only has streets within the city, which is 70% of the size of the Mall in Washington D.C. As a landlocked country surrounded by Rome, the country relies on the Italian infrastructure for access to the Vatican City. 6. Has a government that provides public services and police power. Electricity, telephones, and other utilities are provided by Italy. The internal police power of the Vatican City is the Swiss Guards Corps (Corpo della Guardia Svizzera). External defense of the Vatican City against foreign enemies is the responsibility of Italy. 7. Has sovereignty. No other State should have power over the countrys territory. Indeed, and amazingly enough, the Vatican City does have sovereignty. 8. Has external recognition. A country has been voted into the club by other countries. Yes! It is the Holy See which maintains international relations; the term Holy See refers to the composite of the authority, jurisdiction, and sovereignty vested in the Pope and his advisers to direct the worldwide Roman Catholic Church. Created in 1929 to provide a territorial identity for the Holy See in Rome, the State of the Vatican City is a recognized national territory under international law. The Holy See maintains formal diplomatic relations with 174 nations and 68 of these countries maintain permanent resident diplomatic missions accredited to the Holy See in Rome. Most embassies are outside of the Vatican City and are Rome. The other countries have missions located outside Italy with dual accreditation. The Holy See maintains 106 permanent diplomatic missions to nation-states around the world. The Vatican City/Holy See is not a member of the United Nations. They are an observer. Thus, the Vatican City does meet all eight criteria for independent country status so we should consider it as an independent State.

Education Vision Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Education Vision - Essay Example As a scientific approach to school education, reformers always suggest that new techniques be implemented for the comprehensive development of their studenthood so as to enable them to focus more on their personal abilities to react to real-time situational demands than retain the enormous amount of knowledge they claim from books and classroom lectures. In my belief, education and learning are two different concepts; while the former requires structural administration of external factors to the intellect of an individual, the latter refers to a set of models of behavior and thoughts one processes and retains for reference of future actions from the experience of circumstances and exercise of strategic thinking based on timely requirements. I would like my school to focus more on the practice of intellectual requirements than the exploration of theories. The model for my school should be totally practice based and the one that gives every student opportunity to find his insider out. A schooling method for this purpose requires the co-ordination of the thoughts of parents and teachers. Conservative teaching techniques has been outdated since the introduction of computer-based learning; therefore, schools must implement systems for empirical learning based on individual attention whereby each student gets the benefit of opportunities to excel his field of enthusiasm. A number of characteristics like empathy, respect for the students, flexibility, self-care, patience, sense of humor, collegiality, and high energy level are expected to be met by the teachers to be successful in forming a part of the urban curriculum design. These qualities of the teachers can be utilized only if the student behavior is favorable to the conditions of the urban school. Parents are expected to identify the inherent abilities of their children and guide them the real way of their eventual success. They must be largely communicative and friendly with them.

The Moral Responsibilities of the Businesses Essay

The Moral Responsibilities of the Businesses - Essay Example Before we look at whether or not or not businesses have responsibility towards the future human race in light of the various theories of ethics that we have studied in class, it is important to note that this debate is related intimately with the debate of whether human beings have any moral obligation towards the future generation. The same arguments advanced for and against the debate of whether or not human beings have moral obligation towards the future generation of human race are the same arguments that are applied in the debate of whether or not businesses have obligation towards the future human race and the environment. Having said that, let us look at this debate in light of the various theories of ethics that we have studied in class. The main gist of the debate of whether or not businesses have moral responsibilities to the future human generations lies on whether business moral obligations extends into the future, to the human beings who do not yet exist. The philosophica l problem of this moral issue lies in the fact that, although the future human race does not yet exist, the general life of the future human race will be affected by the current actions of business organizations. The philosophical question therefore is, although the future human race does not exist and we don’t know them, don’t business organizations have moral obligation to ensure that that they conduct their businesses in a manner that endanger or ruin the lives of the future generations?

Final Project Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Final Project - Assignment Example For example, if a caretaker of a child thinks that a child likes to play alone may be used to run an incorrect diagnostic to a child who has Autism or one who does not have Autism. Therefore, practitioners should understand that diagnosis does not necessarily provide families, other professionals, and teachers with relevant information about what requirements do the children needs, or the ability the students to enable them teach them in the best way possible. However, they are also as important since they will provide them with information about the child thus providing people with disabilities, educators, families, and other researchers with a common framework or language and connecting people to funding, resources, and services (Kluth 2010, pg. 11). In this case, the main section the author reveals his thoughts and feelings about the diagnosis of Autism is by providing the different characteristics of children living with Autism. These characteristics describe some of the diagnost ics outcomes that a practitioner can provide when diagnosing an individual. Some of these characteristics include sensory differences, leaning differences, movement differences, social differences, and interests and fascinations (Kluth 2010, pg.11). Movement difference is the first outcome diagnosis of individual likely to have Autism. In this case, it involves both atypical and excessive movement, and loss of typical movement. For example, this movement differences end to impede speech, postures, perceptions, actions, memories, and thoughts. In the diagnosis, that author outlines that a person suffering from Autism experiences these movement problems constantly, in addition, those people on the spectrum will also take many efforts even with the smallest tasks. Moreover, movement differences can result to difficulties in areas of movement such as combining, executing, starting, and stopping. On the other hand, auditory sensitivity is the other diagnostic result in people likely to h ave Autism. Some people will be disturbed by small sounds that others will not get to hear thus can cause a person in Autism has distress (Kluth 2010, pg. 11). Visual Sensitivity is also very common in people with autism, and they are sometimes very sensitive with certain types of colors. In this case, a person with autism may be suffering from being anxious and being fearful thus, the author reveals that visual sensitivity can be diagnosed on those individuals who have Autism (Kluth 2010, pg. 14). Sensory differences among people can be diagnosed as a personal suffering from Autism. One of the characteristics that individuals with autism can be diagnosed with thus; they cannot reveal signs of either a hypo or hyper-response. The other characteristic in this category is the sense that this group of people is vulnerable to for example, sensory overload due to the continued low-level bombardment (Kluth 2010, pg. 13). Lastly, social differences in various levels of the social life can help a practitioner diagnose a person suffering from autism. For example, people suffering from autism will not be interested in social relationships since they lack the necessary skills for successful social interactions, such as; they are bad in reading social signals (Kluth 2010, pg.

Substance abuse among teens Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Substance abuse among teens - Article Example y get into substance abuse owing to peer pressure or just for the sake of pleasure, the long term consequences are extreme and thus, they must be educated on the issue which makes them direct stakeholders in the issue. Thus, both parents and their children as a family unit make an important stakeholder to the issue. For instance, if the child is indulged in the perils of substance abuse, it would be the family who will have to bear the brunt while the child is in rehab, also medical expenses would also be borne by the family. Thus, in any way, the family unit has the most stakes in the issue (Monty, Suzzane & Tracy 22-23). Similarly, the community of the teachers and instructors directly associated with these teenagers also has stakes in the issue since they will be ones looking after the well being of the community. Thus, as an institution these teachers, professors and instructors must also be directly engaged in a meaningful discussion since they understand the behavioral patterns of the issues well, which makes them stakeholders in the debate. On a macro level, the policy makers who are looking after the demand supply pattern of these drugs involved, and thus awareness over the issues is also significant for them. For instance, these policy makers have to be mindful of developing strategies over the age limit of legal availability of certain legalized drugs, similarly, of the level of taxation to be imposed on the purchase of such drugs. Thus, on a holistic level, advocates, community mobilzers, family units and other similar institutions stand to be significant stakeholders in this context. The study aims at addressing the gap in information specifically for the stakeholders identified. In other words, assessing substance abuse with a focus specifically on teenagers is the need of the time since the issue is now affecting stakeholders at a macro level. The paper will thus offer information for these stakeholders who are looking for figures and estimates in a

Bussiness Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Bussiness Law - Essay Example With its exponential growth and the explosion in information and exposure in the world due to it, there was felt a need for an establishment and determination of rules and regulations, and a framework for it to operate within. A committee or a forum was needed to be established that would discuss and lay the framework and the critical and basic issues related to the regulation of the Internet. For this purpose, a convention was held in Athens, Greece, in 2006, called the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), under the UN that laid the grounds for the next convention that was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 12 through 15 of November 2007. Both the conventions established the agenda and objectives of the IGF to be followed internationally. All the stakeholders from all the countries, especially the governments, are encouraged to participate, abide by the regulations and actively involve in their implementation in their countries. This is imperative as Internet crosses all national boundaries and this makes supervision by one body both impossible and inefficient. Four basic and major objectives were laid down in the first convention in Athens, and a fifth was added in the agenda in the second convention in Rio, along with building upon the established four. Basically, all these agendas are based on the Tunis Agenda for the Information Society. These objectives are as follows: Access: the Internet is on an ever increasing growth, however, majority of the world population still lives in isolation from this important tool that has the power to radically change the economic and the social conditions of any society. According to reports, out of the total 6 billion people living in the world today, approximately only 1 billion have access to the Internet facility, the remaining five billion people are still on the other side of the digital divide that is so crucial to bridge. The true power of the Internet can only be fully harnessed if it is utilized by the majority of the people worldwide. Up till now, however, only approximately 1.6% of the world population is benefiting from it. This means that the availability of access is the most important and urgent issue facing the forum, and it has to be tackled first. To counteract upon it, certain proposals have been included in the agenda.First off, an effort would have to be made on the international level, invol ving all participating stakeholders, to set up regulatory bodies and to outline legal policies for investment and establishment of infrastructure in this sector. Most of the population that does not have access to the Internet are the local people living in rural areas. These areas pose several problems. The economic standards of people living there are not very high, and so Internet access would have to be made affordable and easy. For this, local access points, or building-out infrastructures (IGF 2007) would have to
